Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano: The history teller

Wine and Montepulciano share a profound historical link – that is a Tuscan territory that is long associated with extraordinary natural and artistic patrimony. Geographically located amongst beautiful countryside lies an architectural jewel of a city that has remained structurally unchanged since 1580.

The landscape appears almost” privileged” because of the valuable wine produced here. With such a glorious and important past, the territory of Montepulciano holds its history and its Vino Nobile close. These elements essentially guarantee a mark of quality and authenticity to everything sourced in such a “noble land” both now and in the future. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is the first Italian wine to be awarded the Denominazione di origine controllata e garantita (Docg) label.

Approximately one billion euros: this figure quantifies the worth of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano between asset values, turnover and production. The average annual value of wine production comes to around 65 million euros. That is not to mention that about 70% of the local economy is directly related to wine.

This figure is significant in a territory where, out of 16,500 hectares of municipal area, about 2,000 hectares are planted vineyards, i.e., about 16% of the municipal landscape. Of these, 1,208 hectares have been registered for growing Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG wine, whilst 324 hectares have been registered for Rosso di Montepulciano DOC wine.

More than 250 winegrowers cultivate these vineyards (there are about 90 bottlers in all, 80 of which are members of the producers’ Consortium).

About one thousand permanent employees currently work in the wine sector in Montepulciano, which is not to mention the many seasonal employees that ought to also be considered. In 2022, 7.1 million bottles of Vino Nobile (+6% compared to 2021) and 2.8 million bottles of Rosso di Montepulciano (+7.7% compared to 2021) went on the market.
