BIOPAP®: PROFESSIONAL COMPOSTABLE FOOD TRAYS

Interview with Michelangelo Michelangelo Anderlini, founding president of BIOPAP®

BIOPAP® solution is the sustainable alternative to traditional single-use food packaging. BIOPAP® food trays are all natural, plastic free, biodegradable, recyclable, dual ovenable and heat-sealable with organic film, BIOPAP® lids and general films.

Twenty years ago, the visionary Italian company BIOPAP® did not wait for the climate emergency to eco-design the alternative solution to traditional single-use food packaging.

Meanwhile BIOPAP® is currently used internationally from Europe to Americas, Australia and most of the islands whose situation is specially challenged by the increased levels of the seas and the lack of systematic waste recovery systems.

The most enlightened farmers, ready-made meals providers, suppliers of schools, hospitals, factories, elderly homes have decided to participate to the game of helping our planet by working together to:

• Produce more natural food avoiding chemical fertilizers

• Prepare healthy meals

• Organize the culture of using meals rests and farming waste to recover natural compost.

As it is, if we transform a large part of our urban waste into compost and green energy, we could replace our agricultural chemical fertilizers and fossil fuels with local and renewable solutions.

Our technical/ecological offer, associated with multiple initiatives and existing peripheral solutions, makes it possible to generate a real local, responsible and sustainable circular economy. Happily, enough many of them are playing the game.

BIOPAP® food trays are entirely natural, cellulose-based, plasticfree, certified biodegradable, recyclable and compostable, eco-designed to ensure high performance as resistance to fat and humidity, through an ecological treatment patented, guaranteeing excellent impermeability of the support, resistance to a wide range of functional temperatures: from deep freezing (-80°C) in the freezer, to cooking and regenerating in traditional oven (up to +220 °C).

Easily and effectively heat-sealable with lids of the same nature, in cardboard or BIO cellulosic film, they serve as secure and hygienic packaging for transport, as a presentation support and for the preservation of a wide range of fresh or dry foods and frozen or fresh prepared meals.

They combine versatility, technicality, functionality, practicality, while guaranteeing the highest level of compliance with current and future health and environmental regulations. Their quality is acknowledged by the strictest certifications for both use and “end of life”, such as “OK Compost Home”, (home composting) to UNI EN 13432-2002, ATICELCA 501 UNI 11743:2019, Compostability, Quality Management System Certificate, Certified biodegradable in anaerobic environment, suitable for methanization and recently the USDA CERTIFIED BIOBASED PRODUCT label.

According to our initial vision, the notion of “end of life” at BIOPAP® would be much more like a sought-after “new life”,

As it is, the technical and economic solutions do indeed exist to improve the life on our planet for both humans, animals, green, air. It is mainly a question of choice, will and decision of the citizens including politicians, industry to move forward in this direction as many countries and single citizens do.

It is also essential to remark that if our trays are cleaned after domestic use, they can go to selective sorting and follow the recycling process to become recycled paper or cardboard, and if they inadvertently end up in nature, they will quickly be completely biodegradable, without polluting the soils of plains and mountains or the bottom of the seas and oceans. In the contrary, offering excellent food for fish and animals.

BIOPAP® trays do use only renewable resources, do not use pesticides, fertilizers or forced irrigation. They cooperate to protect the environment for humans, animals, forests and air.

We have opted mainly for local and accessible raw materials to guarantee the independence and control of our supplies.

Twenty years ago, when we created this technology, we thought a lot about the sustainability of our approach. Consumers and new regulations are now encouraging and forcing manufacturers and large retailers to find more sustainable solutions.

Our developments and associated practices, initiated two decades ago, are now followed almost everywhere and largely adopted all over the world, also creating a growing responsibility towards future generations.
