Since 1962, The Vini Di Romagna

Since 1962, the Vini di Romagna Wine Consortium has been the association that brings together independent wineries, cooperative wineries and bottlers to safeguard the pro- duction of Romagna wines having a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). It has always up- held and promoted the quality of its wines, the fairness of its prices, and the value of the wine itself as well as its territory.

Over time, the Consortium’s activity has grown significantly to include an increasing number of associated wineries and today it is seen as the protagonist of oenological growth in Romagna. Wine speaks the language of a land, Romagna; a lush blanket that ex- tends from the Adriatic Sea to the Apennines, rippling with hills and valleys painted by the contours of orchards and vineyards, speckled with farmhouses, hamlets, towers and fortresses. Its hospitality is felt when entering its inland, far from mass tourism, where every corner echoes an inviting call, from the estates and fortresses, from the markets and fairs, and especially from the hills covered with vineyards and their unforgettable flavours.

Romagna is a territory of great beauty, where it is easy to come across some of the most beautiful hamlets of Italy. Romagna is synonymous to good food, starting with the Piadina Romagnola and Crescione (true world street food icons), to pasta dishes such as Tagliatelle al Ragù, Cappelletti, Lasagna, as well as traditional sweets like Zuppa Inglese, classic Donuts or the sweet Zuccherini biscuits that always accompany a glass of Sangiovese, Albana or Cagnina.

Romagna has a rich wine-growing history, and its territory includes 60% of the Emilia-Romagna vine yards. The production area of Romagna DOC wines extends south of the Via Emilia and north of the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines.

Viticulture is concentrated at altitudes between 100 and 300 meters above sea level, with some exceptions reaching 500 meters above sea level, in soils with a matrix of mainly sedimentary clay.

Romagna’s wine par excellence is Romagna Sangiovese DOC which not only reflects the strength and the warmth of Romagna, but also includes notes of softness which reflect the sensitivity of its people. Romagna Sangiovese DOC reflects the character of the people of Romagna. It is a strong wine with vibrant acidity, with robust tannins yet round; a wine with a strong fruit flavour, characteristically ready to drink but also refined and harmonious especially with a prepared refined match. It is a red wine with a floral scent and hints of red berried fruit, a good structure and a tannins fine texture, produced in the basic, superior and subarea types. After appropriate refinement, all three types can bear the reference of reserve.

The 12 subareas embody the wealth of the lands in the fullness and features of their wines, outlining the multifaceted identity of Romagna Sangiovese DOC through the interpretations of its soils. Another distinctive wine from Romagna is Romagna Albana DOCG, the first white wine from Italy to have obtained the DOCG designation in 1987.

Romagna Albana DOCG is a golden coloured wine which finds its strengths in a very balanced structure, and its softness with freshness and tannins, which is quite rare in a white wine. For some time now, the wines that have been obtained from the native Romagna vine are remarkable for their personality and peculiar characteristics, something completely different from other white wines present on the national territory. Albana, in its variations of dry, sweet, straw and straw reserve, surprises with truly original and unexpected notes.

Romagna Trebbiano DOC is one of the most common white wines on household tables of Romagna as well as in its taverns and trattorias. Its grapes are cultivated in 60 municipalities whose boundaries are established by DOC specification. Romagna Trebbiano DOC is a white wine with a pleasant fragrance and freshness, produced in sparkling variants.
